Gov. Greg Abbott reappointed Lumberton resident Ben Willis to the Governor’s Committee on People With Disabilities for a term set to expire Feb. 1, 2028. Willis was one of seven people appointed or reappointed.

Fire claims life of Vidor man

A Vidor man was killed in a residential fire in the 200 block of Filmore Street on April 20.The Vidor Police Department was called to the scene at about 12:33 a.m. and officers found the home heavily engulfed in flames.

Bicyclist killed in Port Arthur

A man was killed after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a vehicle April 16, the Port Arthur Police Department reported.The incident occurred at about 10 p.m. on Savannah Avenue near 25th Street. The driver stopped after the crash, and the roadway was closed for several hours.

OPD investigating woman’s death

The Orange Police Department is investigating after a woman was found dead in a roadside ditch in the 8300 block of Highway 87 North on April 19, according to Lt. C.J. Foreman.Officers were called to the scene at about 10:18 a.m.

In a joint special meeting March 31, Port Arthur City Council members and Economic Development Corp. (EDC) officials discussed bringing a grocery store to the “food desert” in the downtown area.The problem, official stated: There are no major grocery stores downtown.
