A man was arrested April 14 after a robbery at a Beaumont grocery store, according to the Beaumont Police Department.
Officers were dispatched at 10:39 a.m. to Market Basket, 8350 Phelan Blvd., for a theft in progress. Before arriving, officers were advised the suspect had been detained by store personnel. An update later indicated the suspect was fighting with an employee.
Officers arrived and took Antonio Vallien, 37, into custody.
Investigators said Vallien entered the store, selected merchandise, and went into a restroom, where he concealed the items in a backpack. As he attempted to leave without paying, loss prevention personnel tried to detain the suspected shoplifter.
Vallien reportedly fled, was apprehended, and assaulted an employee during the altercation. He was charged with robbery and booked into the Jefferson County Correctional Facility.
