A Jefferson County man was arrested following a crash that killed one person April 9.
About 6 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a three-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 27 near Louisiana Highway 397, southwest of Lake Charles in Calcasieu Parish, according to a news release. Erick John, 32, of Lake Charles, died in the crash.
The preliminary investigation found a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Alfonso Arredondo, 32, of Port Neches, was traveling south on Highway 27. At the same time, a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling north, followed by a 2000 Buick Park Avenue driven by John.
For reasons still under investigation, Arredondo crossed the center line and sideswiped both vehicles. He then lost control, exited the roadway, entered a ditch, and overturned.
John, properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and four passengers in the Hyundai, all also properly restrained, were taken to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
During the investigation, Arredondo reportedly showed signs of impairment and was arrested. He was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center on charges of vehicular homicide, five counts of vehicular negligent injury, second-offense DWI, and driving left of center.
Routine toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis. The crash remained under investigation as of press time.
