Javonta Turner, of Beaumont, will have the next half century to think about the crime he committed. Turner, charged with capital murder in the September 2024 shooting death of Ebonie Gilbert on Bennett Road in Beaumont, reached a plea agreement on a lessor charge of murder Monday, Aug. 3, and was sentenced to 50 years by Criminal Court District Judge John Stevens. Turner additionally received a 50-year sentence for aggravated robbery for a prior offense that he was serving deferred adjudicated probation for at the time of Gilbert’s murder. The two sentences will run concurrently.
Gilbert was gunned down in her yard as three men were burglarizing her car.
Turner will have to serve at least half of the 50-year sentence before becoming eligible for parole. Co-defendants, 21-year-old D’Corey Shillow and 20-year-old Tyrdrick Davis, are awaiting trial. Shillow, the alleged gunman, is being held on a $750,000 bond. Davis has a bond of $800,000.
