Flip-flop pleas ends with sex assault conviction

Marco Gamez, indicted in 2021 for sexual assault, was set to take a plea Feb. 10, but confirmed ready for trial instead. The offer rejected would have been 15 years.

Prior prosecutor Preston “Kobe” Hoffpauir later reduced the deal to only eight years of imprisonment, a “deal” that the defendant was set to receive before the victim requested it not be accepted.

Feb. 11, the day of trial, Gamez came in with a new deal – which was accepted by trial judge Raquel West.

According to the terms of agreement, Gamez was sentenced to 12 years in prison, and a lifetime of sex offender registry. The assault, which occurred in 2020, was indicted by a grand jury in 2021.
