PA calls state of disaster for Gulf storms

Port Arthur Mayor Thurman Bartie issued a disaster declaration for the coastal city on Aug. 24, ahead of pending potential severe weather caused by tropical disturbances/storms/potential hurricanes Marco and Laura. According to the disaster declaration issued at 10 a.m.

County braces for disaster

Citing concerns of “eminent threat of suffering widespread or severe damage, injury or loss of life or property,” Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick has declared a state of emergency for the area beginning Aug. 23.

Port Arthur reports another COVID-19 death

Aug. 20, the Port Arthur Health Department reported another COVID-19 related death in a resident of Port Arthur. The individual was an African American female between the ages of 55-60. It has been determined that the individual had underlying health conditions.

City announces additional COVID deaths

Aug. 18, the Port Arthur Health Department reported four COVID-19 related deaths in residents of Port Arthur, including three African American females between the ages of 75-80, 85-90 and 90-95. The other individual was a Hispanic male between the ages of 80-85.

Hardin County tax rate hearings set

Hardin County Commissioners Court will hold its first Public Hearing on the Tax Rate for the 2020 Tax Year on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 9 a.m. A second Public Hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 9 a.m. The proposed Tax Rate of $0.

Closed for COVID cleaning

Fresh off of back-to-school, Evadale ISD announced a halt to activities due to COVID-19. Information form the district alerted students and parents to a school closure beginning Tuesday, Aug. 18, “due to building cleaning and sanitization.” The closure has no announced expiration date.

BISD giving new options for registration woes

Beaumont ISD is encouraging all parents/guardians to register their students for the 2020-21 school year, enacting new initiatives to assist with the process. For BISD, classes begin on Monday, Aug. 17, for all students.

Man killed at car wash in Beaumont

Sunday, Aug. 9, at 5:17 p.m., Beaumont police officers responded to a car wash located in the 1500 block of Washington in reference to a fatal traffic crash.

Murder in Beaumont

Thursday, Aug. 6, at 6:40 p.m., Beaumont police responded to the 5900 block of Bedford in reference to a victim of a shooting. When Oofficers arrived, they located a victim in a parking lot of the apartment complex.

Free COVID testing in Beaumont

Monday, Aug. 10, through Friday, Aug. 14, from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. the city of Beaumont will host two free mobile COVID-19 testing centers at the Central High School Girls Gym, 88 Jaguar.
