Beaulympics postponed until July 17

UPDATE: Due to the downpours, the inaugural Beaulympics have been postponed and moved to Saturday, July 17.

"In looking at the forecast, the safety for our guests, attendees, and volunteers is of paramount concern and this is the only choice we had given the circumstances," stated by organizers in a press release. "With over 60 organizations involved, we know the amount of people affected by this decision and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We appreciate everyone’s flexibility and understanding and hope you join us next Saturday July, 17, at the Great Lawn from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for what we promise will be an even bigger and better event."

ORIGINAL: The inaugural Beaulympics are the summer games for all ages. The Great Lawn at the Downtown Event Centre in Beaumont will serve as the “stadium” on Saturday, July 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and with events for all ages. This one-day extravaganza is completely free to participate in.

The five Beaulympic rings represent the major travel themes that best exemplify Beaumont with events in categories including food and drink, kid-friendly, action and adventure, art and Cajun culture, but all come with a crazy twist that includes gator races, reptile yoga, Zummo sausage, hot wing and hot pepper eating contests, flip cup tournament, ultimate Cajun relays, Texas “Try”athalon and a boudin ball toss where the unathletic will be rewarded and participation trophies are coveted.

For each activity, participants will have the opportunity to earn Beaubucks that can be traded in for prizes like at a carnival.

More than 50 groups and organizations will be in attendance with standout attractions such as face painting, make-your-own board games, mini gushers, kayak lessons, a snow machine, fishing and crabbing demos along with number of Cajun carnival games and crafts and a selfie station to document the fun.

The ExxonMobil Kids Zone will include family-friendly, oversized lawn games, an inflatable obstacle course and Bubblepalooza (bubble pools), which are available all day for anyone to use. Also in attendance will be a number of food trucks and live music.

The United Way of Beaumont and North Jefferson County will also host a dunking booth, which will allow patrons a chance to "dunk" several familiar faces of Beaumont.
