BREAKING: TEA to take over BISD

Texas Education Agency has decided to take over Beaumont ISD.

After two years of delays caused by lawsuits, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the 2025 A – F district accountability ratings Aug. 15, along with the previously withheld 2024 scores.

In Beaumont ISD, the numbers reflected little movement. Beaumont ISD earned an overall "D" rating with a score of 68 for the 2024-25 school year, up slightly from a 65 the year before.

The district scored a 66 in both 2022-23 and 2021-22. Due to Senate Bill 1365, BISD was listed as “Not Rated” in 2021-22 despite earning a "D," and all Texas districts went unrated in 2019-20 under COVID-19 disaster declarations. However, the district soon learned that these exceptions did not exempt them from facing TEA consequences.

According to Senate Bill 1365, if a campus is considered to have an unacceptable performance rating for five consecutive school years, the TEA commissioner shall appoint a board of managers to govern the school district or order the closure of the campus.

Just days after the release of the ratings, BISD Superintendent Dr. Shannon Allen spoke to TEA Commissioner Mike Morath, who said he was not in any rush to make a decision regarding the takeover of the district. A more in-depth and subsequent follow-up visit came Sept. 30, in which Morath stated a decision was months away.

Word came Dec. 11 that the decision had been made by TEA to takeover the district. More details on what to expect following this announcement, will be in the Dec. 18 edition of The Examiner.
