Jefferson County Criminal District Attorney Bob Wortham announced Jan. 25 that Orlando Morris, 34, was sentenced by Criminal District Court Judge John B. Stevens to serve 18 years in Texas prison following a guilty plea.

According to information from the DA’s office, on July 4, 2018, the Beaumont Police Department was investigating a vehicular accident at the intersection of Avenue E and Franklin Street. Morris ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle. Two children were seriously injured in the accident with one child died as a result of the crash.

Morris’ blood tests revealed that his blood alcohol level was .132, nearly double the legal limit.

In addition to imposing a 18-year prison sentence, the court made an affirmative finding of “use of a deadly weapon,” which will require Morris to serve at least nine years before he becomes eligible for parole.
