Saturday, Aug. 21, the Sea Rim State Park will serve as the host location for “Sea Rim Crabbing 101.” Learn the basics to catching crab, while having family fun and planning for dinner! Participants must supply their own chairs and sunscreen, but bait will be provided by the event organizer.

Going virtual

“As a result of the increase in the number of COVID cases,” the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce announced Aug. 9, the Jefferson County “State of the County” is moving to an all-virtual platform, “for the sake of safety.” The event is set to take place Aug. 12 from 11:50 a.m. – 1 p.m.

TWIA seeking rate increase

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association Board of Directors voted Aug. 3 to direct staff to file a rate increase of 5% for residential and commercial policies in its required annual filing with the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). The filing must be made by Aug.

Interstate shutdown

Jefferson County Office of Emergency Management issued a traffic alert for Friday evening, July 23. According to the office, the inside lane of Interstate 10 eastbound at Major Drive will be closed from 9 p.m.-midnight for repairs. Expect possible delays.

Vehicle temps soar

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents that, at 70 degrees on a sunny day, after a half hour, the temperature inside a car is 104 degrees. After an hour, it can reach 113 degrees.

Mudbug sales halted by media post

A Jefferson County game warden followed up on information from a social media post where a subject was selling live crawfish, according to a release from the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Big Thicket brings in big bucks, jobs

A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 309,053 visitors to Big Thicket National Preserve in 2020 spent $20.3 million in communities near the Southeast Texas park. That spending supported 256 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $26.7 million.

Job fair open to all

Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas is hosting an in-person job fair in Hardin County on Monday, June 28. The event is free and open to the public. The job fair will be held at Young Youth Adult Fellowship Alliance (YYAFA), 170 Highway 418 W in Silsbee, from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 p.m.

Traffic alert for barrier work

June 8, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) crews began replacing median barrier at 14 locations along Interstate 10 with new permanent flood prone median barrier.

I-10 shut down

Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens’ office issued a traffic alert on May 24 just before 4 p.m., advising an interstate shutdown heading toward Houston. According to information from the JCSO, I-10 westbound between Hamshire Road and Highway 365 was shut down due to an overturning 18-wheeler.
