County buys cars for constables

Oct. 1, the Orange County Commissioners Court approved the purchase of vehicles for the county’s full-time Constables as part of the 2026–2027 budget year, marking the first time the county has provided county-owned vehicles specifically for its full-time Constables, according to information from the county.

“The purchase represents an important investment in the county’s law enforcement operations and provides full-time Constables with dedicated county vehicles for official duties,” advised Sharla Sorge, Administrative Assistant to County Judge John Gothia. “Previously, Constables were required to use their personal vehicles when conducting county business.”

“This is an important step forward for Orange County and our Constables,” Gothia said. “Our full-time Constables perform essential duties on behalf of the county, and providing them with county vehicles ensures they have the appropriate resources to carry out those responsibilities while also protecting both the county and our employees.”

Orange County officials reported that the transition from personal vehicles to county-owned vehicles helps address liability concerns associated with using privately owned vehicles for official county business, as well as establishes a clearer distinction between personal and official use. The move reportedly also provides the county with greater control over vehicle maintenance, insurance, and use for county operations.

The vehicles will be used by the full-time Constables in the performance of their official duties throughout Orange County. The Commissioners Court’s action is part of the county’s 2026–2027 budget.
