Brandon Charles Jr. was found guilty of murder Aug. 21 by a jury in Jefferson County Criminal District Court under presiding Judge John Stevens, and the sentencing phase in the trial began and ended Aug. 24.
During the guilt or innocence phase, prosecutor Kaneshia Moore detailed through roughly a dozen witnesses the state's case surrounding the 2023 shooting death of Jhamiah Clyde Dixon on July 19, 2023. The homicide took place at the Port Arthur Townhomes in the 3500 block of Turtle Creek Drive; according to evidence presented in court, Dixon was shot once in the back.
Charles faced up to 99 years, or life, in prison. During the sentencing phase, Jefferson County Correctional Facility staff reported poor behavior while Charles was in jail awaiting trial, including abusive behavior and failure to follow instructions. The jury assessed 55 years in prison plus a $5,000 fine
