More than 100,000 students apply for TEFA

The record-setting demand for school choice in Texas hit a new milestone as more than 100,000 students have applied for Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) in less than two weeks. Parents still have more than a month to apply.

The program is not first come, first served. Families applying before the March 17 deadline will have an opportunity to participate. If demand exceeds available funding, funds will be allocated through a lottery that prioritizes students with disabilities and students from low- and middle-income households. The timing of a family’s application has no bearing on their position in the lottery.

A new fact sheet from the Comptroller’s office shows seven in 10 applicants are from low- or middle-income households prioritized by Senate Bill 2, which created the Texas school choice program.
