Williams continuess impressive play on the fairways

Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School boys golf team continued their hot streak with an impressive fourth-place finish in the competitive 6A field at the Nick Doize Invitational, hosted by Katy ISD at Rayburn Country Club on Feb. 2.

The Hardin-Jefferson boys golf team claimed the team title at the Vidor Pirate Invitational on Jan. 28 at the Beaumont Country Club. HJ tied Kelly with a 312 score then won a fifth-man playoff. Orangefield was third with a 331. The tournament featured 25 high school teams and over 150 high school golfers, showcasing top talent from across the region.

Kelly sophomore Reece Williams claimed first place with a 2-under 70. Williams outplayed a competitive field, finishing one stroke ahead of UIL 3A state finalist, Lincoln Parks from Orangefield, who shot a 71.

Earlier in January, Williams delivered an outstanding performance at the Southern Texas PGA’s Srixon Prestige Tour Premiere at Galveston Country Club. Williams finished second in a field of elite junior golfers from Texas and Louisiana, by posting the tournament’s lowest back-nine score, a 1-under 35, in brutal conditions with 40 mph winds and rain.

Despite bogeys on holes 16 and 18, he narrowly missed out on victory, finishing just one shot behind winner Brent Mauer. Williams’ strong finish at Galveston continues his impressive momentum in recent months. In December, he tied for 32nd at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Tommy Moore Memorial in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Since, he finished 26th at the Texas Golf Association Legends Alamo Invitational and 18th at the Southern Texas PGA Prestige Abraham Ancer Invitational at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio. He currently sits in second place in the points standings for the Southern Texas PGA Prestige Player of the Year.
