Jasper coach shot, killed in San Antonio bar

A Jasper High School coach was shot and killed after she was struck by gunfire on the patio of Smoke Skybar in San Antonio, according to media reports. 

As reported, Ayden Rose Burt, 29, was a volleyball and track coach, as well as a teacher, at Jasper Junior High School. 

According to the San Antonio Express-News, the San Antonio Police Department reported the shooting happened around midnight July 22 at Smoke Skybar in the 500 block of East Crockett Street. A preliminary police report stated the victim was sitting on the patio with her back facing the highway when a gunshot was heard; Burt was struck on her right rear shoulder. EMS responded to the location and transported Burt to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. 

Police said it is unclear why the woman was shot and they have not located any suspects. The shooting remains under investigation. 

Burt, along with others from Jasper, was reportedly in San Antonio participating in a training session or meeting hosted by the Texas High School Coaches Association when the incident occurred. She was the daughter of coach David Burt and the granddaughter of former JISD coach Billy Burt. 

Following word of the shooting death, Jasper ISD Superintendent John Seybold released the following statement: 

“It is with a heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of one of our staff members, Ayden Burt. We ask for prayers of comfort for her family, and her extended family, the students and staff of Jasper ISD... Ayden has been teaching in Jasper ISD since 2019, teaching English at both Jasper High School and Jasper Junior High, (and) also serving as a cheer sponsor and coach. We ask that everyone respect the privacy of the family and staff at this time.” 

Seybold reported counselors were available at Jasper Junior High School on July 23 and ongoing support will be available for students and staff.
