Bishop raises funds for hungry neighbors

It’s a win all the way around – admission covers breakfast for the attendee, funds are raised to support Catholic Charities programs, and hungry Southeast Texans receive the sustenance they need from a nonprofit cemented in the community.

“Have Breakfast, Help the Hungry – Catholic Charities Doing It Again!”

Billed as a breakfast fundraiser benefitting the population served by the programs of Catholic Charities, the “Breakfast with the Bishop” event is also known as an opportunity to honor a community member, living or posthumous, who has left an indelible mark on others. This year, the breakfast will honor Monsignor Salvador “Salty” Culotta, a longtime supporter of Catholic Charities’ work with those in need.

The 31st installment of “Breakfast with the Bishop,” this year under the auspices of Beaumont Bishop David Toups, will get underway at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, at St. Jude Thaddeus Family Life Center, 6825 Gladys Ave. in Beaumont.

Sponsorship for the event is still available at levels from $5,000 to $500.

Tickets are on sale for $25 a person. For sponsorship and ticket information, call (409) 924- 4421.

The “Breakfast,” which was created in 1992, not only raises funds for the Catholic Charities programs serving individuals in a nine-county Southeast Texas area, but it also gives Southeast Texans a chance to learn more the programs and provides an opportunity for them to get to know the Bishop of the Beaumont Diocese a little better.

Following that 31-year tradition, Bishop Toups, as well as other clergy, will don an apron to serve and greet guests.

“St. Jude Thaddeus Family Life Center seems an appropriate venue for this year’s event since the honoree, Msgr. Culotta, was the founding pastor of the parish,” an announcement of the event declared.

Catholic Charities programs include Market to HOPE (Helping Other People Eat) and the Hospitality Center, which both help individuals and families dealing with food insecurity. Catholic Charities also offers help to children dealing with the loss of a loved one through the Elijah’s Place program.

Other Catholic Charities programs include Asset Building Case Management, Immigration Services, and Counseling and Disaster Response.
