Collaborative agreement to make SETX higher education more accessible

WGU Texas and the Region 5 Education Service Center announced a partnership to provide center employees and the school districts it serves with multiple pathways to earning bachelors or masters degrees and furthering their educational pursuits at WGU Texas.

Region 5 ESC serves more than 6,100 educators across 34 school districts in Southeast Texas with a mission to assist school districts in improving student performance while promoting greater efficiency and effectiveness. More than 70 programs and services are offered within the divisions and are provided in response to school district needs.

“We take great pride in our ability to aid our districts in providing a world-class education for the students of Southeast Texas,” said Kelly McBride, director of the Education Certification Program. “We are excited to establish this new partnership with WGU Texas to provide additional options and benefits for employees and school districts to earn their degrees.”

This collaborative agreement between Region 5 ESC and WGU Texas streamlines the process for employees pursuing a degree at WGU Texas, the collective anticipates. Through the agreement, employees and educators may select from more than 60 accredited bachelors and masters degree programs in information technology, business, health professions and teaching. WGU Texas offers benefits, including:

• Eligibility to apply for the Institutional Partner Fund valued at up to $2,500, credited at $625 per term,

• Access to more than 30 additional scholarships and financial aid,

• Comprehensive and generous transfer policy,

• Access to career services, student and alumni events and activities, and benefit fairs and information events, and

• Flat-rate tuition. 

“WGU Texas is excited to assist Region 5 ESC employees and the districts they serve to achieve their higher education and career goals,” said Linda Battles, chancellor of WGU Texas. “This agreement will provide employees with individualized, competency-based learning that allows them the flexibility to earn a degree at their own pace while juggling work and family responsibilities.”

In 2022, WGU graduated nearly 12,000 students nationwide from its teachers college. WGU’s AAQEP- and CAEP-accredited School of Education was named No. 1 for quality and value by the National Council on Teacher Quality and the top school in the nation for graduating new STEM teachers. Region 5 ESC serves school districts, including those in Hardin,  Jasper, Jefferson, Orange, Newton and Tyler counties; High Island ISD, Hull-Daisetta ISD, East Chambers ISD, and Liberty ISD.
