Fair for free

Provost Umphrey Law Firm, LLP is sponsoring a night of free admission to the Young Men’s Business League’s (YMBL) South Texas State Fair on Monday, March 27. Gates open at 5 p.m. The fair, which will be March 23 through April 2, is located at the Ford Park Fairgrounds at 5115 IH-10 South in Beaumont.

“We’re proud to call Beaumont home, and the South Texas State Fair is a beloved tradition in this area,” Provost Umphrey managing partner Joe Fisher said. “We are thrilled to give this community, which has always embraced us, free admission.”

The 2023 fair features an exotic petting zoo, camel and pony rides, carnival rides, live entertainment and food vendors.

The firm is also a sponsor of the YMBL Harold Engstrom Memorial Special Kids Rodeo. To learn more about the fair and rodeo, visit ymbl.org.

“It’s going to be a great evening at the fair; we hope to see everyone out there,” Fisher added.

BCP wins national award

The Beaumont Community Players has been honored with the 2023 Twink Lynch Organizational Achievement Award from the American Association of Community Theatre, which has awarded the designation to a community theatre every year since 2003. Beaumont Community Players is only the second Twink Lynch given in the state of Texas.

The Twink Lynch Award recognizes AACT member theatres for successfully completing major steps in new directions, expanding services to their communities, or moving to the next level of organizational development.

“In a state where arts are not celebrated, to win a national award is a pretty big deal,” said BCP Executive Director John Manfredi. “If you are looking for place to be welcomed and accepted as you are, then community theatre is the place for you to be, and the fact that we are a diverse organization is part of the reason we are being recognized.”

McFaddin music features Night & Day

The McFaddin-Ward House invites the community to enjoy live entertainment on its amply budding spring grounds at Music at the McFaddin’s featuring Beaumont’s own “Night & Day Orchestra,” a traditional big band performing classic swing music, on Thursday, March 30, at 6:30 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and snacks as they gather on the historic home’s lawn at 1906 McFaddin Ave in Beaumont for an evening of great tunes, dancing and community fellowship. Gates open at 6 p.m. The event is admission free and open to the public.

“For the first time, our popular Music at the McFaddin’s will include a dance floor on the lawn and who better provide the music for a swinging good time than the talented ‘Night & Day Orchestra,’” said Tony Chauveaux, McFaddin-Ward House executive director. “Our family-friendly music events not only allow the community to relax on our beautiful grounds, but also inspire an appreciation for a variety of musical styles.”

In case of inclement weather, Music at the McFaddin’s will be cancelled. Upcoming events at the museum also include: Music at the McFaddin’s featuring “Western Bling,” a Houston-based group performing classic western swing music with a contemporary twist on Thursday, April 13, at 6:30 p.m.; a family Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and the continuing lecture series with “Monuments: Creation of our National Symbols,” a presentation by Ivan

Schwartz (sculptor, painter, inventor, and founder of New York-based StudioEIS), on Thursday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m.

Goofing on Greg  for good cause

Spindletop Rotary Club will host the Celebrity Roast of KFDM Meteorologist Greg Bostwick on Thursday, March 30, at the MCM Elegante’ Hotel from 7-9 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Some Other Place and Spindletop Rotary Club.

Friends are invited to attend the night of good-natured fun as Bostwick’s special friends “roast” him with stories from behind the scenes at KFDM. Roasters include Kelli and Bob Phillips, Greg Kerr, Al Caldwell and more.

Bostwick received his education in meteorology in 1979 and joined KFDM-TV in July that same year. He appears on the evening news, as well as the KLVI-AM radio morning show each weekday.

Bostwick also consults for area industry and emergency management, has forecast over 100 hurricanes and tropical storms over the years, and takes great pride in helping Southeast Texas families “weather” the weather events.

Besides being a huge Texas A&M football supporter, Bostwick also runs Bostwick Farms, a greenhouse and nursery business at his home near Winnie.

Individual tickets are $75 through March 26 and will not be available at the door. Visit www.gregbostwickroast.org for detailed packages and payments. For more information on Spindletop Rotary Club, visit spindletop-rotary.org.
