Texas Coffee Co. recipient of Spindletop Award

The Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual meeting and Spindletop Award presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the Beaumont Civic Center. Created in 1999 to recognize larger area organizations for outstanding corporate/organizational citizenship, this year’s Spindletop Award recipient is the Texas Coffee Company.

The late Charles J. Fertitta Sr. founded Texas Coffee Company in 1921 with an investment of $1,800, a Ford Model-T truck, a few pounds of coffee and one room “shotgun” style behind the Crescent Market on Magnolia Street in Beaumont.

Fertitta then recapitalized the company in 1926 by forming a partnership with R.C. Maceo and Joseph S. Serio and moved the plant to its current site on Martin Luther King Parkway.

It was 1968 when Texas Coffee Company became the first coffee company in the United States to package coffee in vacuum-packaged foil bags. Some three decades later, key management positions were assumed by third-generation family members including current President Joseph F. Fertitta and Vice President/Secretary-Treasurer Donald P. Fertitta.

Texas Coffee Company has a distinguished tradition of supporting local civic organizations including the YMBL, Gift of Life, Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas and many others.
