Museum of the Gulf Coast
The Museum of the Gulf Coast in Port Arthur enshrined two members into their Sports Hall – Johnny Fuller and Charean Williams.
Fuller, who was born in Beaumont and graduated from South Park High School, was a multi-sport athlete at Lamar University. He was an all-conference football player and also qualified for the 1968 Olympic trials in the decathlon. He did not participate after his coach, Ty Terrell, and five members of the Lamar track team were tragically killed in a plane crash on April 28, 1968.
He also played eight seasons as a safety in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints.
Williams, a graduate of Texas A&M University, has covered the NFL for more than two decades and was the first woman to have a voted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and first woman to serve as President of the Football Writers Association. She was also honored with the Dick McCann Award in 2018. Her first writing job out of college was at the Orange Leader.
Track & Field
Bridge City senior pole vaulter Morgan Louvier will continue her college education as well as compete on the McNeese track and field team.
Louvier has already won multiple gold medals this season and recently set a new school record with a 11-foot-3 vault at the Orangefield Bobcat Relays, which broke the previous 11-foot record set by Kati Thornton.
Lamar Cardinals
The LU’s women’s track and field team finished second overall at the Southland Conference Indoor Championship in Birmingham Alabama, and was just the second team trophy for the program in school history.
Winning medals were Yasmin Austridge (gold, 800 meters, 2:10.96; silver, 3,000 meters, 9:56.79), Nie Clatworthy (silver, 5,000 meters, 17:15.38), Parl Eelma (silver, long jump, 19-1.25; bronze, 60-meter hurdles, 8.81), Faith Outing (silver, 400 meters, 55.14), and the distance medley relay team of Austridge, Clatworthy, Outing and Jillian Howard won gold in 11:42.53.
Despite not medaling, Chloe Rodriguez set a new school record in the 400-meter prelims in 54.90.
The men’s team placed eighth overall. Receiving medals were Cameron Chin (bronze, 400 meters, 47.30), Jacarrius Demmerritte (bronze, triple jump, 48-10), Kenson Tate (gold, long jump, 19-5.25) and the 4x400 relay of Chin, Tate, Trent Guidry and Jaylon Roberts earned bronze in a time of 3:15.27.
Ana Jolic was named the SLC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after posting a perfect 2-0 singles record against SFA and Southern Miss.
The baseball Cardinals got five runs on five hits to take a first-inning lead and never looked back cruising to an 11-2 victory over Alcorn State on Feb. 28 at Vincent-Beck Stadium. The victory also tied a school record (2009) for the best start in program history.
Quinn Waterhouse got the start and went 3.0 scoreless for LU allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.
Eight different Cards collected hits led by multi-hit games from Kevin Bermudez (3-for-5, home run, two runs scored), Josh Blankenship (2-for-4, 2 RBIs, run scored) and Tanner Wilson (2-for-4, run scored).
Lamar will go in search of the outright record Friday, March 3, when they open a three-game series against Pennsylvania at 6 p.m.
