Standing in front of Port Arthur City Hall April 8, mask and gloves donned, Mayor Thurman Bartie issued additional orders aimed at mitigating the spread of COVID-19.

The mayor's order closes all public playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts and golf courses and driving ranges. The rims have been removed from backboards and city playgrounds have been roped off, according to the mayor. Bartie did say the city's parks remain open to the public for exercise, dog-walking or just getting out of the house, as long as groups of 10 or more don't gather. He noted that violators will likely be told to disperse by patrolling police, although officers have been empowered by previous orders to issue fine of up to $2,000.

Bartie "vehemently" discourages in-person worship services, even with Easter and other spring holidays upcoming. The pastor turned mayor assured residents city offices and services remain functioning. However, city offices will be closed on a rotating basis to allow the areas to be disinfected. Vacated offices will still be on call, with employees working remotely from home.
