State parks open, prepay required

Texas State Parks (TSP) is changing their operations in the wake of COVID-19 spread.

According to information from TSP, most state parks remain open; however, changes have been made to help protect the health and well-being of visitors, volunteers and staff. Beginning April 1, anyone visiting a state park must purchase passes and camping permits online prior to the visit.

As the situation evolves, more changes may come, says TSP, including sudden park closures.

Currently, those visiting state parks can expect: No onsite transactions beginning April 1, fewer park visitors allowed, no programs or equipment rentals and, possibly, park closures. TSP said some parks have been closed due to difficult complying with the guidelines for social distancing or disinfecting. In the Southeast Texas area, Village Creek State Park, Sea Rim State Park and Martin Dies Jr. State Park are allowing visitors at this time, though visitor centers are closed.
