The Texas Association of School Administrators announced one local school board has been nominated for the 2023 Outstanding School Board award, and 12 school district boards have been selected as regional nominees for the 2023 TASA School Board Awards.

Mrs. Candy, jail cook, retires after decades of service

After 20 years, Dora Phillips retired as the cook at the Orange County Jail on July 10, reported the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Phillips, also known as Mrs. Candy, was honored with a retirement party for her many years of service.

Grant gives funds to power mental health during disaster

Jefferson County has awarded a grant of $957,474 to Spindletop Center through funds received from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA). The grant funds will allow Spindletop Center to purchase and install a power generator for its North Campus facility, located at 655 S. 8th St. in Beaumont.

Free armed security officer training, job placement

CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System will hold a free Level 3 Armed Security Officer Training Program for those interested in pursuing a security career in a health care setting. This is the only Level III training program offered in the region. The one-week training is July 17-21 from 8 a.m.
