'Meat Up' for Happy Hour

The Shorkey Center is hosting a “Meat Up” fundraiser on Thursday, May 12, from 5-8 p.m. at the downtown Beaumont venue 434 Fannin, featuring a sampling of the best bites from 1701 Barbeque, beer and wine, and live music.

Family Portrait Luncheon offers hope with Alzheimer’s

Findings from the 2022 Alzheimer’s Association Disease Facts and Figures annual report showed that more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s and dementia have also increased 17% during the COVID-19 pandemic.

'What I've Become'

The Art Studio, Inc. (TASI) will host artist Caleb Sims’ exhibition “What I’ve Become” during the month of May, and a reception for the exhibit is planned for Saturday, May 7, from 7-10 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public, and will be held at the TASI studio, 720 Franklin St.

Meet at the maypole

Hardin-Jefferson football

The Hardin-Jefferson Hawks will have a new head football coach and athletic director next season in Nederland graduate Zach Bass, who comes to Sour Lake from West Brook where he was the associate head coach and offensive assistant for the Bruins. He will replace Dwayne Dubois, who retired in March.

Willie Ray Smith Awards

Dubbed the “Heisman Trophy of High School Football in Southeast Texas,” the annual Willie Ray Smith Awards were held May 2 at the MCM Eleganté in Beaumont. Winners were Kheagian Heckaman (Offensive) and Leighton Foster (Defensive).

Sports shorts: Lamar Cardinals

On Saturday, May 7, Lamar baseball will honor three of their icons in Jim Gilligan, David Bernsen and Kevin Millar. Food, live Zydeco music and fun begins at noon followed by the ceremony at 1:45 p.m. The first pitch between the Cardinals at UT Rio Grande Valley begins at 2 p.m.

Drug dog finds crack in man's undergarments

After calling PAPD Canine Duc to a traffic stop, where the officer sniffed approximately three ounces of crack cocaine in a man’s underwear, police arrested a 52-year-old man April 26. At about 6 p.m., PAPD officers conducted a traffic stop in the 2900 block of 22nd Street.

PA driver caught with coke

During a Port Arthur traffic stop April 27, officers arrested a 29-year-old man after finding more than nine ounces of cocaine. At about 9:20 p.m., PAPD officers conducted a traffic stop in the 2400 block of W. Highway 73.
