With the Democratic and Republican primaries just weeks away, the candidates are all set for the March 5 ballots.

Dec. 11 was the final day individuals could file as a candidate in Jefferson, Hardin and Orange county races, along with federal and state offices. Feb. 5 is the last day citizens may register to vote in the elections and make changes to name or address. Residents can check voter registration status at vote. org. Jefferson County residents can also call (409) 835-VOTE (8683) or (409) 985-VOTE (8683) to check registration status.

Early voting is set statewide for Feb. 20 through March 1. If a runoff is required for a seat, the date for runoff election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28.

The winners from each party's primary will be placed on the Nov. 5 general election ballot.

According to the Secretary of State, a candidate may run for office as a declared write-in in the general election for state and county officers.

A declared write-in candidate must submit a Declaration of Write-in Candidacy and submit a filing fee or petition in lieu of a filing fee in order for votes cast for that candidate to be counted in the election. The filing period for write-ins is July 20 through 5 p.m. Aug. 19.

According to the Texas Election Code, a person who was a candidate for office in the primary election is ineligible for a place on the list of write-in candidates for that same office in the succeeding general election for state and county officers.

The Green and Libertarian parties nominate candidates via convention.

Because this is a presidential election year, a large voter turnout is expected. Voter turnout in the 2020 election was a record 66.8% of voters casting ballots.
