Chris Chapman and his wife Zilpa Plascencia had a discussion one night after a long day’s work at a local car dealership. The couple discussed what each other’s dreams were – opening a restaurant.

“We decided to go all in and give it a shot,” said Chapman. “We thought that if we could make it work, we could show our kids, and others, that if you have a dream, go after it. Don’t ever let your dream die with day to day life. If you have a goal and a dream, then make it a reality.

Tacos La Shula was born. What’s in a name? “La Shula” is his wife’s nickname, which means “the perfect woman.” Tacos from the perfect woman.

Located at 3535 W Park Ave. in Orange, Tacos La Shula opened in November 2019. Fajitas, gorditas, tamales, enchiladas, tacos, creamy mush- room chicken and more are on
this fun menu.

“We are using actual recipes from my wife’s grandmother, who is from Chihuahua, Mexico,” said Chapman. “We try to bring authenticity with each dish that we serve, but also throw in a few American twists – since I’m American and we live in Southeast Texas.”

Seafood Gringo Fries, which are homemade French fries smothered with shrimp, crawfish, queso, lettuce, pico de gallo and sour cream, isn’t something you normally find on a Mexican restaurant’s menu. It works.

Another non-traditional yet popular dish is the Creamy Mushroom Chicken that features a juicy chicken breast served with homemade cream of mushroom plus fries and small salad. A complete meal for $11.99.

Let’s get to the tacos.

La Shula offers Birria Tacos for $9.99. Foodies will receive two tacos filled with marinated beef, onions, cilantro and cheesy served in a crispy corn tortilla with a side of beef broth. Tremendous.

Another go-to on the menu are the Street Tacos with four options to choose from – Chicken, Azada, Pastor or Barbacoa served on a flour or corn tortilla. With one bite, the flavors take you on a spiritual journey that transports you to a phenomenal street taco vendor south of the border.

Feeling lucky? Then step up to Tacos La Shu- la’s “Gusto Burrito Challenge.” It’s a 3-foot, 10-pound burrito. If you are alone, you get 1 hour to finish the Gusto. If you want to bring a friend, you get 30 minutes. Only three of 72 attempts have been successful. Those who complete the feat get the meal and drinks paid for, T-shirt and their picture on the Gusto Burrito Challenge wall.

For those who love to spice things up, Chap- man said they will soon offer a Spicy Taco Challenge for anyone that dares to sweat.

Don’t let the unique items fool you, Tacos La Shula also offers great selections such as fajitas, burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas, Mexican Cheese- cake and churros.

“We treat each guest as family from our servers, hostess and cashier” added Chapman. “We want you to feel like you are at home. With all the options during this crazy time, we truly thank each and every customer who chooses to dine in with us.”

Tacos La Shula is open Monday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For to-go food orders, call (409) 216-7465.
