NEWS SHORTS | Historical Commission honors local radio

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) recognized “Bayoulands” by 91.3 KVLU of Beaumont as the 2022 recipient of the Award of Excellence in Media Achievement on Feb. 2 at the Real Places Conference in Austin.

The Award of Excellence in Media Achievement recognizes outstanding reporting on preservation or heritage tourism issues to increase awareness of the state’s historic and prehistoric resources.

Established in 2016, “Bayoulands” highlights local history, art, topics of interest to residents and other cultural museums featuring undertold histories, such as in-depth discussions of Karankawa, their culture and known history. On occasion, “Bayoulands” will make exceptions to cover current events. For example, one episode was dedicated to an interview with a local Ukrainian student to discuss the ongoing war and get an authentic first-person perspective.

“Bayoulands” has aired monthly throughout the KVLU listening area of Southeast Texas, and has since become accessible on Spotify as a podcast, extending its reach to international audiences and bringing new awareness to Texas’ past and future contributions to progress and education.
