Lights at Lamar

The Cardinal Lights holiday light display will return to the Lamar University campus for the Southeast Texas community to enjoy the entire month of December, and presenting sponsor ExxonMobil is set to host an official Cardinal Lights kickoff event on Thursday, Dec. 1, from 5:45-7:15 p.m. in the Wayne A. Reaud Building courtyard featuring children’s activities, hot cocoa and holiday cookies followed by fireworks. One lucky Lamar University staff member and their family will be selected to flip the switch at the lighting ceremony.

The remainder of the month, thousands of lights will adorn trees and illuminate campus buildings around Jimmy Simmons Boulevard, Jim Gilligan Way and the Rolfe Christopher Drive entrance to campus. Families are invited to take a slow drive through campus to enjoy the lights and other holiday decorations.

Additionally, the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum also will be merry and bright for the entire month of December with Christmas in Boomtown: City in Lights, a holiday event for all ages, featuring music, hot cocoa, letters to Santa, holiday carols and more. An opening reception is set to take place on Dec. 2 from 6-9 p.m.

The month-long events also coincide with the museum’s annual Holiday Food Drive in partnership with the Southeast Texas Food Bank. Guests who bring five non-perishable food items will be granted free admission to the City in Lights thanks to event sponsors including ExxonMobil, Golden Pass LNG, United Rental and Pepsi Co.
