Lamar alum goes to space posthumously

Nov. 30, Beaumont native and Lamar University alumni Jay Clinton Hall finally fulfilled his lifelong dream of going to space when a portion of his cremated remains was set for launch into space on Celestis’ Earth Rise mission, known as the Aurora Flight.

Hall was born on Jan. 30, 1959, in Beaumont, to Willard James Hall and Mildred Powell Hall, and died on May 7, 2020, at the age of 61. Hall attended Forest Park High School, the University of Texas at Austin, and received a BA degree from Lamar University.

Hall and others on the November flight will briefly experience the weightlessness of space before returning safely to Earth. Each flown capsule, with the cremated remains or DNA sample still sealed inside, will be presented to family and other loved ones as a permanent keepsake.
