Jefferson County Clerk Carolyn Guidry’s office will no longer accept appointments for marriage licenses, she alerted the public Tuesday, April 7.

“Due to the increase number of coronavirus cases in Jefferson County, the limited exposure and safety of the employees is a priority,” Guidry wrote in notice of the halt of service. To receive a marriage license, both parties must swear before the county clerk.

“We can’t really do that remotely,” Chief Deputy Theresa Goodness said. Although the county clerk’s office is still manned by a rotating crew, Goodness added, the county clerk is committed to the safety of the staff and is following regional emergency declarations recommendations to limit public interaction.

Residents may continue to file documents via e-file or mail for processing. Any document requested via mail with the correct identification and payment will be processed within three business days.  Further questions about the cost for filing a specific document can be directed to the Jefferson County Clerk’s the office at (409) 835-8475 or www.co.jefferson.tx.us/cclerk/.
