After dedicating more than a halfmillion dollars of taxpayer money to ensure Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas’ success over the past few years, city of Beaumont officials released in a prepared statement, the municipality will not partner with the event provider for the 2025 local edition of Mardi Gras.
According to the statement, good faith negotiations broke down and fizzled completely by the beginning of November. A five-year contract between the city of Beaumont and Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas, Inc. expired Sept. 13 and past-due payments from Mardi Gras SETX, city correspondence detailed, resulted in a breach of the existing contract.
While the organization worked to resolve the outstanding balance issue, which the nonprofit did Aug. 30, the city reportedly met with local Mardi Gras officials to keep the situation from occurring again. Mardi Gras SETX requested a reduction in police personnel, the ability to use outside agencies and private companies to provide security, the ability to use all city facilities within the grounds and outside the grounds at no cost, use of the Civic Center for their Aurora Grand Ball fundraiser at no cost, and other items that were classified by city staff as “cost prohibitive, unbudgeted capital expenses, or would require change in city policy.”
“Subsequent discussions led to adjustments that reduced the Mardi Gras organization’s financial commitment while increasing the city’s investment,” the city statement read. “However, the city did not compromise on the safety of the community and affirmed that security personnel levels would continue to be determined by the city, according to the city.”
A commitment between the city and Mardi Gras SETX was requested by Nov. 1. Nov. 8, Mardi Gras SETX informed city staff that the event would not move forward in conjunction with the city of Beaumont.
“While the outcome of these negotiations was not what we had hoped, the city remains committed to supporting downtown events and the community they serve,” the city-provided statement read. “As part of this commitment, the city prioritizes being a good steward of public funds, ensuring resources are allocated responsibly and in the best interest of our residents but this should not be done at the expense of compromising safety.”
