Lamar University announces massive baseball upgrade

Pending approval of the Texas State University System Board of Regents on Thursday, Nov. 21, Lamar University will be constructing a new state-of-art building at Vincent-Beck Stadium due to an elite gift from Teri and Glen Morgan, according to the TSUS Board of Regents agenda. Groundbreaking on the Teri and Glen Morgan Baseball Complex is set to begin in February 2025.

The new 8,500-square-foot building, which will be designed by PBK Architects and be built next to Vincent-Beck Stadium and the surrounding area, will consist of a new locker room, coaches’ offices, training room, film room, lounge and equipment room. Entering the building through the lobby will also be a hall of fame celebrating Lamar history in the sport. The project is expected to be complete for the 2026 season.

“Teri and I first met at the baseball stadium many years ago and we are honored to be able to make this donation to the Lamar baseball program. Teri and I have always wanted to commemorate that time by making improvements to the facility,” said Glen Morgan. “We are impressed with the strides that Lamar University has made recently and its commitment to building winning programs. The entire university has been on a tremendous upswing over the course of the past two years, and baseball has been huge part of that under the direction of head coach Will Davis. We look forward to the future and to the continued success of Lamar Athletics.”

Teri is a 1985 alumna of Lamar University; her husband Glen is a 1975 graduate, who has been recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus and Southeast Texas Legend at Lamar, and who earned a Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law in 1978. Glen is a prominent and successful attorney in Beaumont, and a partner with the Reaud, Morgan and Quinn law firm.

Strong supporters of LU, the Morgans have contributed to Cardinal Athletics, the Cardinal Club, and Friends of the Arts. A major gift from the Morgan Charitable Foundation on behalf of the Morgans in 2010 enabled LU to create the Morgan Luxury Suites, complex overlooking the football field adding significantly to the redevelopment of the university’s athletics program. They have also created and supported numerous endowed scholarships, including the Donald E. Morgan Scholarship in honor of Glen’s late father, contributing to the university’s mission of providing educational opportunities to deserving students.

Glen has also served as a valued board member of the Lamar University Foundation, the Lamar University College of Education and Human Development Advisory Board, and currently heads the NIL Collective in support of Lamar University athletics.

Recently, the Lamar baseball program was named a recipient of the 2023-24 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Academic Excellence Award. The honor is high praise for a team that also set the standard on the diamond as Lamar won 44 games on their way to a Southland Conference regular-season title. To be nominated for the ABCA Academic Excellence Award, teams had to post at least a 3.0 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the academic year. The award covers NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, junior college and high school baseball. Lamar was one of 800 schools among all levels to receive the honor.

"We are very excited to announce this new facility and very thankful for the overwhelming generosity of Teri and Glen Morgan,” said Director of Athletics Jeff O’Malley. “The impressive part about this new facility is that it will provide for all facets of the baseball program within the same building with the locker room, coaches offices, training room and team meeting rooms all under the same roof.

“Head Coach Will Davis has done an excellent job of building on our rich baseball tradition at Lamar. Now, due to the generosity of Teri and Glen Morgan, we are able to provide our coaches and student-athletes the resources they need to continue being successful on the field and in the classroom,” added O’Malley.

The Cardinals are coming off one of the best seasons in program history. Big Red had the second most regular season wins (44) in the country last year, posted the best single-season winning percentage in school history, went on the road to sweep No. 25 Oklahoma, won the Southland Conference regular season title – their first since 2004 – and senior pitcher Brooks Caple was named SLC Pitcher of the Year, an All-American and was a ninth-round draft selection of the Chicago Cubs.

Over the course of the past three seasons, Lamar baseball has recorded the fifth most wins of all NCAA Division I programs in the state of Texas.
