Lamar Cardinals

The men’s basketball team improved to 2-1 on the young season after a 98-69 home win over small school Huston-Tilloston on Nov. 14. LU finished with six players in double-figures led by Jakevion Buckley (16 points), Chris Pryor (16), Nate Calmese (16), Terry Anderson (12), Cody Pennebaker (11) and Yuto Tamanouchi (11).

They return to action this weekend in the MTE Tournament in Lake Charles, Louisiana, playing Lindenwood on Nov. 18, Western Carolina on Nov. 19 and McNeese on Nov. 20.

The football Cards were once again dominated this time by New Mexico State in a score of 51-14 on Nov. 12. The loss drops LU to 1-9 on the season.

Lamar will close the season Saturday, Nov. 17, in Lake Charles against McNeese at 7 p.m.

In their third ever trip to the NCAA tournament, LU’s soccer team looked to make the third time the charm in hopes of advancing onward. Instead, their season came to an end following a 3-1 loss to LSU in the first round Nov. 11. The Cards were outshot 22-6, but their lone goal came from Christine Kitaur. LU’s season ends at 15-2-2 overall.

The volleyball season came to a close Nov. 12 when the Cardinals lost to McNeese, 3-2. Senior Amber Johnson led the team with 17 kills. Junior Tytiana Johnson (14 kills), senior Kaitlyn Gil (13) and sophomore Paige Dugan (12) each finished the match with good numbers.

LU finished the season 9-20 overall and 3-15 in Southland Conference action.

Lamar’s cross country teams each competed in the NCAA South Central Region Championships on Nov. 11. While both teams had solid performances, one member of the men’s team placed high enough to qualify for the NCAA Championship on Nov. 19 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

George Wheeler, who all season long has been the top runner for the men’s team, placed eighth with a time of 30:40.8. He was the second Southland Conference runner to finish after Dennis Kipngeno of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished one spot ahead of him. Wheeler becomes the first Cardinal to reach the NCAA Championships since Jordan Rowe back in 2019.
