In addition, the first 50 people to arrive will receive a KVLU commemorative swag bag and an opportunity to win a special “golden ticket” prize. The event will close with a re-airing of the inaugural KVLU broadcast from 1974. To RSVP for the KVLU 50th Anniversary event, call (409) 880-7228.

K-V-L-U, translated as “The Voice of Lamar University,” first went live on the air April 30, 1974. On that Tuesday, community leaders and officials from Lamar University gathered in the Setzer Center at 3 p.m. for the inaugural broadcast followed by the first program to be aired on KVLU, “All Things Considered,” the flagship news magazine from National Public Radio that can still be heard today on KVLU each weekday 4 – 8 p.m.

KVLU’s program offerings include a highly diverse 24/7 schedule of news, music and local features with a mission “to educate, enlighten and entertain listeners.”

“This is quite a momentous occasion,” station manager Jason M. Miller said of the five decades KVLU has been operational. “It says a lot about the community that listener-supported radio is alive and well in Southeast Texas.

“We are excited to celebrate and see what the next 50 years brings.”

KVLU, an NPR affiliate licensed to Lamar University and serving the citizens of Southeast Texas with morning, mid-day, and afternoon news, local features and an eclectic array of music programs, also serves as an on-campus lab for students studying broadcast journalism.
