After dropping the doubles point, LU’s women’s tennis team rallied to win four of the next six matches to defeat former conference rival Sam Houston, 4-3, on Jan. 22 at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Complex.

“I’m so proud of this team today,” said head coach David Wong. “They really battled hard and overcame some tough moments to get the win. We put ourselves in a tough position after doubles, but they responded well.”

Winners included Megan Do, Margarita Nikonorova, Ana Jolic and Elena Rubio.

Their next match will be Saturday, Jan. 28, at the University of North Texas in Denton at 11 a.m.

The women’s basketball team snapped a three-game skid with a 72-52 home win over Incarnate Word on Jan. 21 to improve to 9-9 overall and 3-4 in Southland Conference play.

Sophomore Akasha Davis led the team with 26 points, which was one shy of her career-high. Malay McQueen added 14 points followed by Sabria Dean and Portia Adams, who each added 11.

The men’s basketball team fell to Incarnate Word, 70-64, at home Jan. 21. Freshman Nate Calmese ended the game with 16 points, 11 of which came in the game’s final five minutes.

The Cards are 6-14 overall and 2-5 in league action.

Both teams will return to the Montagne Center court Thursday, Jan. 26, against Texas A&M-Commerce beginning with the women’s game at 5 p.m.
