Nestled on Beaumont’s Park Street, McCloney’s Florist is celebrating 60 years of service to Southeast Texas. However, the roots of this beloved establishment run even deeper, intertwined with the enduring love story of Walter and Marion McCloney, who exchanged vows in 1960 before venturing into the floral business in 1964.
Even in his 80s, Walter McCloney maintains an aggressive work ethic, dedicating himself to an average 12-hour workday alongside a dynamic duo of colleagues who affectionately serve as his bosses. With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, the shop buzzes with activity as orders pour in and phones ring incessantly.
Anticipating the surge in demand, McCloney ensures a bountiful supply, securing a standing order of 800 roses from his wholesaler. Reflecting on the shop's evolution, Walter reminisces about the early days when he and Marion embarked on their floral venture.
“Marion worked right here alongside of me for most of those years until she retired,” Walter fondly recalled of humble beginnings on 4th Street before growing to their current location on Park Street in 1974.
Residing in Pear Orchard, the McCloneys have become fixtures in Beaumont, earning the trust of locals and luminaries alike. Walter recounted with pride the occasions when he was entrusted to create arrangements for prominent figures, including professional athletes and personal friends. It was the opportunity to fashion a corsage for the late Coretta Scott King that left an indelible mark on his memory.
As Walter meticulously tended to his floral creations, he shared wisdom on maintaining the flowers’ vibrancy.
“We send them out fresh and guarantee perfection for four days,” he explained. “But, with proper care – changing the water, nourishing them and shielding them from heat – they can endure much longer.”
