Lumberton ISD seniors are eligible to apply for $1,000 scholarships in the name of former Raider #64 Ben Featherston through the Athletic Booster Club. Applications can be picked up in the front office with the counselors.

Featherston was a 2021 Lumberton High School graduate who passed away on Nov. 26, 2021, from an immune system disorder. Featherston became ill in September at the University of Texas in Austin where he was a pre-med sophomore. He was a Magna Cum Laude graduate and Eagle Scout who played six years of football for the Mighty Raiders.

Featherston is remembers for excelling in academics and, whether it was helping others rebuild after a hurricane, helping fellow students in the classroom, building community projects in Boy Scouts, donating blood, helping at church, or volunteering at the Southeast Texas Food Bank, he found time to help others.

“Importantly, Ben found time to befriend those who maybe had a harder time making friends or befriend those that did not quite fit in other groups,” LISD Athletics reiterated in the call for scholarship entry. “He believed it was important to be a good friend and to treat all people with respect. At his funeral, Ben had 24 pallbearers.”

The #BeLikeBen scholarship will be awarded to an applicant that has demonstrated a 3.0 GPA or higher, participates in sports and demonstrates service in the community.
