Man guilty of child sex crimes dies in jail

A Hardin County man who received a life sentence to Texas imprisonment – plus 160 years – for multiple child sex crimes, died in the Hardin County Jail on Jan 31. Ronnie Lee Gordon, 64, of Silsbee, died about 3:30 p.m.

Man sentenced for murder of ‘friend’

After pleading guilty to the murder of a man he called his “friend,” Darian Petry of Port Arthur was sentenced to the maximum allowed under a plea agreement with prosecutors at the end of January. Petry stood accused of shooting longtime friend Kenneth Swallow, 30, of Port Arthur, on Aug. 16, 2020.

Vegetable canning class planned

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office, 11475 FM 1442 in Orange, will host a vegetable canning class on Saturday, March 4. Hands on canning will be taught by Family and Community Health Agent Fallon White. The class is $35 per person and payment is due by Feb. 24. Call (409) 882-7010 to register.

Free permits to trap feral hogs in Big Thicket

Big Thicket Preserve staff will issue free feral hog trapping permits at the visitor center beginning Monday, Feb. 6, at 9 a.m. Permits will be issued first-come, first-served until all 50 have been claimed. A Texas hunting license is required for trapping in the preserve.
