Free tax help available, volunteers sought

Southeast Texans making up to $59,000 a year can benefit from assistance provided free of charge in filing 2022 tax returns, made possible though the VITA program, managed by Lamar University’s Division of Diversity, Inclusion and Community Relations, beginning Feb. 4.

Teachers awarded $150K

The Beaumont Foundation of America announced 15 recipients of the 2022 Wayne A. Reaud Excellence in Education Award, an honor that has recognized superior teachers whose dedication and leadership inspire both students and fellow educators, since 2009.

Winners announced in the 118th Stark Reading Contest

Over the past five weeks, local finalists have participated in the last rounds of the 118th Miriam Lutcher Stark Contest in Reading and Declamation, a program sponsored by the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation.
‘I have three teenagers in 10th, 11th and 12th grades, and it’s a journey,’ said a beaming Joe Evans of Alonha, Jordynn and Denver, pictured here alongside their dad and grandma, Betty Evans. ‘I lost my wife (Misty) in 2017, so it’s been a journey, and I’m proud of the perseverance they’ve shown through it all. They keep me going.’
