Beaumont Animal Care (BAC), the city-backed animal shelter, is offering assistance to residents in the form of a free spay and neuter program, all in hope of curbing unwanted animals brought into the world without a home to live in.
According to BAC, the main reason the shelter stays at maximum capacity can be reduced to one answer: pet overpopulation caused by unaltered animals.
“Every week, we speak with hundreds of residents about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets,” BAC shared. “While some people still hold outdated beliefs about the procedure, we know that, for many families, the biggest barrier is cost. That’s why we don’t just educate, but we also offer a FREE spay/neuter voucher program to help Beaumont residents be part of the solution.”
BAC estimates that one unspayed female dog can have up to two litters per year, with an average of 6 – 10 puppies per litter. An unspayed female cat can have 3 – 5 litters per year, resulting in as many as 24 kittens annually.
“We see the effects of overpopulation every day,” BAC affirmed. “Currently, we are caring for 142 animals, and more continue to enter our shelter daily!”
Each Beaumont household is eligible for one voucher per year. Applications must be completed in person at the shelter, 1884 Pine St., Tuesday–Friday from 10 a.m.– 5 p.m., or Saturday, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Applicant are urged to bring a valid photo ID and utility bill with a matching name and address within Beaumont city limits.
