Everyone’s favorite Scottish nanny is headed to Southeast Texas. “Mrs. Doubtfire – The New Musical Comedy,” the internationally acclaimed hit tour will take the stage at the Lutcher Theater for the Performing Arts for two shows – Tuesday, Feb. 24, and Wednesday, Feb. 25, both at 7 p.m.
“This show is a perfect blend of comedy and heart,” said Lynae Sanford, executive director of the Lutcher Theater. “‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ reminds us that family comes in many forms, and it does so with incredible energy, humor and Broadway-level spectacle. We’re excited to bring this feel-good, family-friendly comedy to our community.”
Wig, glasses and a well-timed “Hellooo!” are taking center stage as “Mrs. Doubtfir” reinvents a beloved comedy for a new generation of theatergoers.
Starring a wildly talented cast and packed with unforgettable songs, “Mrs. Doubtfire” tells the story of out-of-work actor Daniel Hillard who will do anything for his kids. After losing custody in a messy divorce, he creates the kindly alter ego of Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire in a desperate attempt to stay in their lives. As his new character takes on a life of its own, Mrs. Doubtfire teaches Daniel more than he bargained for about how to be a father. What follows is a touching and uproarious journey about family, love, second chances and the things we do to stay together.
Remember the movie? The 1993 film was based off the 1987 book, “Madame Doubtfire,” and included the iconic performance by the late, great Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan and others. It was the second-highest grossing film of the year ($441 million) and several awards including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes and also gave Williams a nod for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
With music and lyrics by brothers Wayne and Karey Kirkpatrick under the direction of Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, the musical debuted in 2019 and hit Broadway in 2021. This stage adaptation transforms the familiar story into a high-energy musical filled with original songs, dazzling choreography and plenty of heart.
Themes of family, forgiveness and second chances anchor the show, balancing slapstick humor with heartfelt moments that often catch audiences by surprise.
“As our marketing team has been out and about promoting our season, we’ve noticed that ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ has been one of the most talked about shows of our 46th season ever since we first announced what was coming to the Lutcher Theater,” said Andy McCall, the theater’s marketing manager. “It’s such a beloved multi-generational classic that people of all ages perk up and take notice when they hear us mention ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ is coming or come across it as they thumb through our season brochure. The show closely follows the storyline of the movie with some updated pop culture and technology references to place it in a present timeline.”
Tickets start at $63 and can be purchased online at lutcher.org, by phone at (409) 886-5535 or the Lutcher Theater box office at 707 Main Ave. in downtown Orange.
Don’t miss this high-energy musical comedy that proves a little disguise, and a lot of love, can go a long way. “Mrs. Doubtfire” proves that a little ingenuity – and lots of love – can bring a family back together, even if it takes a wig and a Scottish accent to do it.
