Reindeer have a long and fascinating history intertwined with human culture, Arctic survival, and legend – Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph helped guide Santa’s sleigh through the night sky, which helped deliver gifts to children all around on the world on the night of Christmas Eve.
Though the Stark Museum of Art may not be the North Pole, the community is invited to experience the magic of the holiday season with “Reindeer Trail,” a must-see holiday tradition that features festive and vibrant displays of holiday cheer. The museum will be transformed into a whimsical wonderland Nov. 19-Dec. 20.
Inspired by the North American wildlife featured in the Stark Museum of Art’s collection,
“Reindeer Trail” features 50 original reindeer designed by community members across Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana.
“Each reindeer tells a unique story,” said Ashley Thornton, executive director of the museum. “They all reflect the creativity of the artists who brought them to life. ‘Reindeer Trail’ is a celebration of art, imagination, and the holiday season. It is a testament to the creative spirit of our community, and we hope the spirit brings joy and inspiration to your heart.”
As you stroll along the family-friendly trail, you’ll encounter reindeer adorned with vibrant colors and imaginative themes. The inclusion of art-making stations and mobile scavenger hunt means children (and adults who stay young at heart) can engage rather than just observe.
“Art meets holiday spirit,” explained Thornton. “While the event is festive and lighthearted, the museum uses the opportunity to link to its art collection. For example, visitors can explore artworks depicting reindeer and winter scenes throughout the galleries. You can toggle between ‘holiday fun’ and ‘art appreciation.’ You can also climb aboard Santa’s sleigh for a memorable photo.”
The exhibit, free of admission fees, is on display Wednesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If that wasn’t enough, Reindeer Games Day will feature Santa Claus and his traveling stable of live reindeer outside the museum with festive holiday crafts throughout the education center and embark on a delightful reindeer scavenger hunt 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22.
Patrons can also get creative with “Cookies & Crafts” on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 2-7 p.m. and take a photo with Buddy the Elf.
Admission and all activities are free.
“My favorite part of ‘Reindeer Trail’ is seeing the decorated reindeer as they arrive,” said Thornton. “Our community really pushes the limits when it comes to creativity, and it’s always a joy to see the fun and festive designs.”

“This is the perfect time to visit the Stark Museum of Art because the ‘Reindeer Trail’ transforms the galleries into a festive wonderland that blends art, community creativity, and holiday cheer,” she said. “The limited-time exhibit offers a unique way to experience the museum’s wildlife-inspired collection while enjoying hands-on activities and local artistry. It’s a joyful only-once-a-year opportunity to celebrate the holidays surrounded by art and imagination.”
