Health partners humbly honored at Holiday Appreciation Luncheon

In celebration of the significant health care impact of Gift of Life’s Men’s Health and Prostate Cancer Program, the nonprofit organization hosted a Holiday Appreciation Luncheon Program to hon-or the “tireless efforts” of medical partners and community advocates.

The collaborative endeavors were vital in the successful provision of essential medical services,

educational initiatives, and navigation to critical resources and care, nonprofit supporters shared.

“This year, Gift of Life reached more than 800 at-risk men providing free health screenings at four accessible locations,” said Dr. Gwendolyn Lavalais, Gift of Life’s Medical Director. “These screenings, which included prostate cancer tests and a comprehensive set of primary care evaluations, were made possible by dedicated, compassionate healthcare professionals who selflessly shared their time and expertise to support men of Southeast Texas.”

The Holiday Program featured an award ceremony recognizing those whose leadership and commitment were touted as instrumental in the delivery of care. Awards were presented to Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas CEO Justin Doss, MBA, FACHE; Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas Radiation Oncologist Ernie Hymel, MD, PhD; and Southeast Texas Cardiology Associates Founder Rudy Sotolongo, MD, FACC, FSCAI.

“We are privileged to have the extraordinary accomplishments of these champions within our community,” said Gift of Life Executive Director Norma Sampson. “Their commitment to our cause represents what can be achieved when like-minded caring individuals come together with a shared vision to address the disparities affecting our region. Their selflessness fuels our mission, enabling us to continue advancing the health and wellness to those who need it most.”

In 2024, Gift of Life provided prostate cancer screenings for 812 men at locations in Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange and Kountze. In addition to prostate screenings, clients also received primary care evaluations, physician consultations and guidance to follow-up care for any abnormal results.

Since its inception, Gift of Life has made available nearly 12,400 men’s prostate health screenings,

diagnosing cancer in 81 men, with all diagnostic and treatment expenses fully covered by the organization.
