New year, new laws

Effective Jan. 1, a host of new House and Senate bills will become state law. The 88th Texas Legislature, at the end of lawmakers’ fourth special session, have 30 House and Senate bills set to go into effect this year — more than 20 related to property, appraisals and taxes, according to Capital.

LU students return ‘Home for the Holidays’

As the fall semester concludes at Lamar University, the "Home for the Holidays" program sees LU students returning to their respective high schools, creating meaningful connections, sharing personal stories, and providing valuable insights into their college experiences.

Company awards $3,544 grant to OISD

Orangefield ISD was awarded a $3,544 grant from International Paper, according to an announcement by the school district. The funds will reportedly be used to purchase items to enhance the curriculum in the dyslexia and ESL classes.

Students create joyful sounds

The West Brook High School Chamber Ensemble performed a pre-meeting mini-concert for the Beaumont ISD Board of Trustees meeting in December that included Jingle Bells, Silent Night, Deck the Halls, and other holiday favor- ites.

First Day Hikes

A new year brings new opportunities to explore nature at a State Park. For 12 years Texas State Parks have hosted hikes and various activities to ring in the new year. Last year, Texans hiked 8,764 miles at 69 parks across the state.
