Two motorcyclists killed within days

In a three-day span, two Southeast Texas motorcyclists have died, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported.

May 2, Ryan Walter, 42, of Nederland, was pronounced dead at the scene by a justice of the peace following a crash that happened at about 3:48 p.m. on FM 1006 near FM 2177 in Orange County.

According to DPS, investigators determined Walter was crossing railroad tracks northbound on FM 1006 on a Kawasaki motorcycle when he lost control, laid the motorcycle on its side and struck a pole, according to a preliminary investigation.

April 30, DPS reported another motorcyclist, Dominick Helveston, 59, of China, was killed in a crash at State Highway 105 and Keith Road in Jefferson County.

A preliminary crash investigation indicated that, at 7:28 p.m., Helveston failed to yield to a GMC pickup traveling east on SH 105. Helveston was pronounced dead at the scene by a justice of the peace.

The pickup’s driver, along with an adult passenger and two children, were not injured.
