Beaumont police responded to a traffic hazard early Sunday morning, Aug. 2, after a pickup truck became trapped in a large sinkhole caused by what officials believe was a water main break.
Officers were dispatched around 2:15 a.m. to the intersection of Central Drive and East Drive. When they arrived, they found a black Ford F-150 partially submerged in a deep, wide sinkhole that was rapidly filling with water.
No injuries were reported.
Crews from the Beaumont Fire Department, Streets Department, Water Utilities Department, Emergency Operations Center, and Spanky’s Towing responded to secure the area, assist with the incident and begin repairs.
According to the city of Beaumont, water service to nearby residents was restored about 13 hours later, and repair work began immediately.
Tuesday, Aug. 4, a Modern Concrete and Materials mixer truck became stuck in the 5200 block of Fifth Street after the roadway gave way beneath the vehicle.
According to Jennifer Robertson, communications and marketing manager for the city of Port Arthur, the affected section of roadway has been barricaded. As of press time, there was no estimated timeline for repairs. City engineers are investigating the cause of the road failure, which also had not been determined as of press time.
