Nov. 6, Port Arthur Health Department Director Judith Smith released word that another resident of the city has died due to complications related to COVID-19. This is the 40th COVID-19 related death for Port Arthur since the beginning of this pandemic. The victim is described as an African American male between the age of 45-50, who presented with underlying health conditions.

“I would just like to remind the public that we are still in a pandemic and the importance of keeping themselves safe by following the public health protocols,” Smith advised. “The mask mandate is still in effect and people should still wear a mask when they are in public places where social distancing is not available.

“Many people are recovering with no problems or complications, but this virus could be and has been fatal for some people with underlying health conditions.”

According to health department information, 80% of individuals who contract COVID-19 will have mild to moderate symptoms and fully recover, but may spread the disease to people who are at high risk. The elderly and people with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems are at a much higher risk for developing serious complications from COVID-19.

The Port Arthur Health Department has partnered with Gulf Coast Health Center to provide free testing for the community. Port Arthur residents should call the COVID number at (409) 983-8880 for a referral for testing. It is not necessary to have symptoms in order to get tested.
