More than 41K cast early ballots in SETX

More than 41,300 people cast ballots during the first week of early voting in Jefferson, Hardin and Orange counties for the Nov. 8 General Election.

According to the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office website, 25,809 registered voters cast early ballots, including 2,376 by mail. The Texas Secretary of State website reported 84,167 people in Jefferson County voted early in the November 2020 General Election of the 147,718 registered voters recorded at the county clerk’s office.

In Hardin County, Election Clerk Alysa Freeman reported that 3,703 of the registered 41,455 registered voters cast early ballots. Freeman noted 833 people voted on Oct. 28 – the largest single-day turnout last week. In the November 2020 General Election, 27,744 people voted in Hardin County.

According to the Orange County Elections Administration Office, 9,479 people voted early, including mail-in and provisional ballots. Orange County reported 28,163 voted early in person in the November 2020 General Election. The office further reported there are 55,026 registered voters in the county.

Early voting runs through Friday, Nov. 4. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.

According to the Texas Secretary of State’s website, 8.371 million people voted in the 2018 General Election, the last midterm election. Since the 2008 presidential election, more people have voted early than on Election Day.

The Texas Tribune reported, as of Oct. 27, nearly 12% of the state’s registered voters cast early ballots, or roughly 2,064,857 people. Today, there are 17.7 million registered voters in the state, compared to 15.8 million in 2018.
