Local golfers compete for state titles

Chase Ion, a freshman from HardinJefferson, tied for 45th at the UIL 4A State Golf Tournament at Legends Golf Course in Kingsland on April 29-30. Ion shot rounds of 77-83 (160). Wimberley’s Jaxon Donaldson dominated the field with a 136 to earn a gold medal.

Orangefield junior Lincoln Parks finished second at the UIL 3A State Golf Tournament played two days at Grey Rock Gold Club in Austin, Texas. Parks, who finished eighth last season, shot scores of 72-72 and finished one shot back of sophomore Reed Blacklock of Lubbock Cooper Liberty, who shot 69-74 to win gold.

On the girls’ side, a host of Southeast Texas individuals and teams will compete for state titles May 6-7.

In Class 4A, Lumberton freshman Annie Whitehead won the Region 3 championship by scoring a birdie on the first playoff hole narrowly besting China Spring’s Hannah Antunes. Whitehead will attempt to win state at Legends Golf Course.

Senior Ava Henson will represent Deweyville in Class 2A at Lions Golf Course in Austin. She finished seventh of 86 golfers at Regionals.

The Hardin-Jefferson Lady Hawks, regulars at state events in recent years, took second place at the 4A Regional Tournament. The team consists of Hallie Westfall, Peyton Hidalgo, Kamryn Picard, Jenna Robertson and Chesney King.

The Orangefield Lady Bobcats captured third place at the 3A Regional Tournament. Rylie Kethan, Jordyn Rucker, Abby Slaughter, Lela Francis and Emma Pierrottie will compete at ShadowGlen Golf Club in Manor.
