Funeral held, more details released in coach’s death

Funeral services for Ayden Rose Burt, a Jasper ISD teacher and coach, were held July 26 at the First Methodist Church in Jasper under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home.

More details have been released in the shooting death of the 28-year-old, killed after midnight July 23 at a San Antonio nightspot.

Burt, who helped coach volleyball and track, and taught at Jasper Junior High School, had been in San Antonio to attend the Texas High School Coaches Association conference. Burt and other high school coaches were attending a vendor-sponsored event at the Smoke Skybar, which is located just east of the downtown area.

KENS News in San Antonio reported Burt was sitting outside on the upper level of a patio with her back to Inter- state 37 when a gunshot hit her in the back. She was rushed by ambulance to a hospital where she died shortly after arrival.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told KENS he believes the fatal shot came from a passing vehicle on the interstate or the service road. Police searched the parking lot of the business for any shell casings but didn’t find any.

Police still don’t have a suspect and they’re urging anyone in San Antonio who has information about the senseless crime to come forward.
